Thesis Statement

AJG’s tailwinds that propelled the stock to highs during 2024-2025 due to elevated interest income have faded, but the underlying strengths of the tollbooth-style business remain intact. The market has discounted AJG due to sentiment that AI will replace middleman insurance brokers, a narrative that relies heavily on speculation that has not shown up in the financials of the business. Gross and profit margins remain strong, helped by strong organic and acquisition growth reaching 5% and 23% respectively during Q1 2026. Cyclical growth pressures such as property insurance pricing and peaking interest rates have introduced temporary headwinds that are expected to taper off in the future, allowing increased credit issuance and acquisitions by increasing leverage.

Market Dislocation

Recent cyclical pressures, namely global property renewal premium rates falling 7% due to the cyclical nature of property insurance pricing, and the reduction of interest rates have reduced the tailwinds that AJG enjoyed during the past three years. AJG is additionally in the middle of an aggressive M&A cycle, creating uncertainty within the short term on the temporary operational efficiency of the company, as long-term success of the company is tied to finding good M&A prospects. AJG sits at a current P/E of 33.12x compared to a five year average of 42.96x, while revenue growth and gross margins have remained strong. The market has discounted the company on the assumption that the majority of its profitability is derived from the tailwinds it enjoyed from elevated interest rates, which the core financials and historical M&A successes dispute.

Valuation

AJG saw an increase of 16.18% in diluted EPS, and currently trades at a 15.9x forward P/E, compared to a five year average trailing P/E of 42.96x. Net income growth grew 16.76% Q1 2026, coupled with gross margin reacceleration to 46.24%. EBITDA margins sit historically strong at 32.72% while revenue grew by 27.66%. Five year EV/FCF average of 34.74x compared to 34.62x, which represents the underlying ability of AJG to sustain high quality free cash flows independent of tailwinds it previously enjoyed. This combination of double-digit revenue/earnings growth, margin expansion, and strong cash generation allow for AJG to leverage its strong cash position to find acquisitions to create strong shareholder value.

Business Quality

While AJG typically finds itself using a significant amount of leverage due to its acquisition-heavy nature, acquisitions have historically returned sufficient value, and acquisitions will likely remain the main use of free cash flow going forward. AJG’s insurance brokerage segment, which accounts for about 90% of revenue, remains its most attractive revenue driver. By targeting smaller insurance brokerage operations for acquisition, AJG often finds attractive returns on goodwill, which have typically held at 10-13% historically. ROIC without goodwill sits at 18-22%, showing that organic growth remains strong. With brokerage operations remaining stable and predictable, expect AJG to leverage its healthy FCF position to target acquisitions within the currently fragmented brokerage industry, while client retention rates sit at between 90-95%. Management reaffirmed their full-year total organic growth outlook of approximately 6%, which should help expand profit margins back above 10%.

Sell triggers

Organic growth deceleration for three consecutive quarters, coupled with gross margins falling below 40% for two consecutive quarters or FCF margins falling below 12% will trigger a sell, as it signals the deteriorating organic business quality. Fair value will be placed at $250, a combination of Morningstar fair value averages and analyst consensus.
